The 1950s were the epitome of stability in most peoples minds after the 1930s depression and war in the 1940s and prior to the turbulant 1960s. In actuality, the 1950s saw a lot of changes in fashion, music, television, movies and much more. The 1950s also brought us cold war unease, the Korean War, civil rights problems, to name a few issues. .

50's Fashion

Poodle skirts, pedal pushers, and saddle shoes for teen girls and white t-shirt, jeans, and leather jacket for the guys were the choice for dress of the younger crowd. Girls also liked the full skirts with crinoline slips with a button-up blouse and scarf at the neck.

The teen hairstyles for gals were ponytails and short and curly, while the guys went for the ducktail which was slicked back. There were also flatops for the guys as well as crew cuts.

Music

Music of the 50s was a big change and parents weren't too happy with it. The days of the slow ballad by Frank Sinatra was replaced by Elvis Presley and rock n roll with his swivel hips. Many other artists appeared on the scene such as Pat Boone, Fats Domino, Bill Haley and the Comets, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Everly Brothers, to name a few. The old favorites such as Perry Como, Patti Page, Tony Bennett, Nat King Cole, etc. were still very popular.

Television

Television was in its infancy in 1950. By the late 1950s, many people had at least a black and white tv and at night, the family sat down together to watch such great programs as Gunsmoke, Lassie, American Bandstand, Leave It to Beaver, I Love Lucy, Truth or Consequences, and a lot more.

Movies

The 1950s gave us horror movies such as The Thing, westerns like High Noon with Gary Cooper, Singing in the Rain musical starring Donald O"Conner, epic movies with Charleton Heston in The Robe, great dramas such as On the Waterfront with Marlon Brando, romantic comedies like The Seven Year Itch with Marilyn Monroe. Some of the other great actors/actresses of this time were Humphrey Bogart, James Dean, Gary Cooper, Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, Lauren Bacall, to name a few.

Cars

New cars introduced during the 1950s were the Ford Thunderbird, Chevrolet Corvette, Cadillac Eldorado, Mercedes 300SL, Chevy Bel Air, to name a few.
